Heatwave walks: what time do you go out?

Rotem Bar

· Tel Aviv-Yafo

The forecast says 34°C again this week. I've been walking Bamba at 6:00 and after 19:00, but even then the pavement feels warm. I check it with the back of my hand for seven seconds before we go out.

What do your dogs do on hot days? Cooling mats, sprinklers, indoor games? Anything you'd avoid?

Same routine here. We also swapped one walk for a sniffing game at home: scatter part of his dinner on a towel and let him find it. It tires him out without the heat.

In Haifa we go down to the beach at sunrise. Bring fresh water though. Dogs drink seawater when they are hot and it upsets their stomach.

Good point about the seawater, I did not know that.

The cooling mat was a waste for us, he ignores it. A damp towel on the balcony tiles works better.

Remember the car too. Even ten minutes in a parked car is dangerous at these temperatures.
